Task 5 – Past extreme events and recent analogues

Coordinator: Marcelo Fragoso

Main objectives: establish the chronology of past Portuguese extreme events; verifying their magnitude, assessing their geographical extension and their socio-economic consequences; characterization, whenever possible, of the atmospheric conditions during the identified extremes, contributing to their atmospheric reconstruction

Procedures: detection and selection of extreme events; study of associated impacts (case studies); atmospheric reconstruction (case studies)

Expected outcomes/results:

Delivering a list of past extreme events, accompanied by an assessment of their impacts and of the associated atmospheric circulation

Two papers in international journals

A partial contribution to a MSc and/or PhD thesis is also expected
